Figure of change in total domestic nonfinancial debt, 1991-2007. Data are plotted as a curve. The curve starts in 1991 at nearly 4.5 percent. It then generally increases, reaching nearly 5.5 percent in 1997 and almost 7 percent in 1998. It generally decreases over the next two years, reaching about 5 percent in 2000. It rises further from 2001 through 2005, when it peaks at more than 9 percent. It then declines, reaching about 8 percent in 2007.

Note: The data are annual and are computed by dividing the annual flow for a given year by the level at the end of the preceding year. Value for 2007 is partially based on estimated data.
