Enrolling in the Plan

You may enroll yourself and your eligible dependents in the FEHB Program. After you enroll in one of the FEHB plans, you'll receive an identification card showing your identification number. Present this card to health care providers and hospitals to verify coverage.

   Employees

The chart below includes information on how to enroll in the Plan and the effective date of your coverage.

IF YOU ARE... THEN YOUR COVERAGE IS EFFECTIVE...
an eligible employee and you enroll within 60 calendar days of your hire date the first day of the biweekly pay period following your enrollment, as long as you are in a pay and duty status on that day
an eligible employee and you enroll during the annual open season the following January
an eligible temporary employee and you enroll when you are first eligible the first day of the biweekly pay period following your enrollment, as long as you are in a pay and duty status on that day
an eligible temporary employee and you enroll during the annual open season the following January

If you don't enroll when you are first eligible, you must wait until the next annual open season, unless you have a qualified family status event. Generally, if you have a family status event, you may enroll for or change coverage within 60 days of the event. For a full list of opportunities to change health coverage and the related effective dates, please see a Benefits Counselor. You must provide proof of the event to qualify.

   Spouse and Children

The chart below includes information on enrolling your spouse and children in the Plan.

IF YOU... THEN...

do not enroll your spouse and children when they are first eligible
you must wait until the next annual open season, and their coverage will be effective the following January
have no eligible dependents when you first become an FEHB participant
you may change to family coverage within 60 days of adding your first eligible dependent with proof
have eligible dependents when you first become an FEHB participant, but they have coverage through another source and then subsequently lose their coverage you may change to family coverage within 60 days of your dependents' loss of coverage with proof

If you do not enroll your dependents within the time limits listed in the chart above, you will have to wait until the next annual open season.

If You and Your Spouse Both
   Work for the Board

You cannot be covered as both an employee and a dependent in the FEHB Program. If you and your spouse both work for the Board (or another government agency) and are eligible for FEHB coverage, one of you (but not both) may enroll your dependents in a plan. If you don't have any children or your children are not eligible, you and your spouse may each choose "self only" coverage.

   Coverage Levels

The FEHB Program offers two coverage levels from which to choose. You may elect:

  • Self only coverage; or
  • Family coverage.

If you choose family coverage, all of your eligible dependents will be enrolled in your FEHB coverage. You can't choose to cover certain eligible dependents and not others.

  The Plan Year

Open season changes are effective the first day of the first full pay period in January.
