March 11, 2002 INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING THE CAPI PROGRAM FOR THE 2001 SCF Please see warning below. DO NOT PROCEED WITH INSTALLATION UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENT! The CAPI program for the 2001 SCF is written in the Surveycraft language. This program is intended to be run under Windows 98 and other such operating systems that support DOS instructions. 1. The program files are contained in a zip archive file called 6009demo.zip. Download this file to the C:\ drive. 2. Start a program, such as WinZip, that is capable of uncompressing ZIP archived. 3. Open the 6009demo.zip archive, select the appropriate option to preserve the names of the folders of files in the archive, and extract. The installation will create C:\MT7 and C:\6009. In addition, it will add a file to the Windows directory (Sc73path.bat). Note that the programs may not work correctly if the default Windows directory is not named "Windows"). 4. The installation will add icons to the desktop for the main SCF instrument (SCF200~2.pif), the interviewer comments module (SC8af8~1.pif), the module for entering the screener data for area-probability respondents (SCF200~1.pif), a module for entering the screener data for list-sample respondents (SCF200~3.pif), and a module for entering data describing the initial contact with an informant and the characteristics of the neighborhood around the sampled address (SCF2004.pif). Rename the icons as you wish. 5. To begin any of the programs, double-click on the appropriate icon. When the module is completed, the program will terminate automatically; to terminate a module before it ends, simultaneously press the "Ctrl" and "End" keys. Function keys are used to enter a set of special responses: "Don't know" is entered using the key, "refuse" is entered using the key, a volunteered range is entered using the key, and "no typical payment" (where applicable) is entered using the key. The key displays help files that were available during the interview. The key allows the entry of a comment associated with the current question. The version of the programs provided here uses a special demonstration edition of the Surveycraft language that does not allow any data to be saved from a given session. For more information on Surveycraft, see http://www.spss.com/spssmr/products/surveycraft. The programming for the SCF modules is not copyrighted. When referring to this implementation, please cite the 2001 Survey of Consumer Finances conducted by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. The program code for the SCF modules was originally written by Val Cooke and Geoff Walker, and it was updated for 2001 by Phil Panczuk at the National Opinion Research Center. The questionnaire wording was revised from the 1998 version by Gerhard Fries, Arthur Kennickell, Martha Starr-McCluer, and other staff at the Federal Reserve. Substantial testing was performed by all these people and by Ryan Bledsoe and Amber Lytle at the Federal Reserve. Nonetheless, some errors remain in the program; such errors are minor, and they are not documented on this site. ****************************** WARNING ****************************** Although we have successfully installed this program on PCs here at the FRB, no claims explict or implict are made about the functioning of this program elsewhere.
