Notices and Updates

  • July 15, 2004: In fall 2004, the Federal Reserve Board plans to issue an annual revision to the index of industrial production (IP), the related measures of capacity and capacity utilization, and the data on industrial use of electric power; the date of the revision is subject to the availability of the comprehensive source data from the Census Bureau's 2002 Economic Census.
  • July 9, 2004: Seasonal factors for auto and truck production have been reestimated using final production data through May and plans through September. Factors have been revised back through April 2004 and extended through December 2004.
  • June 16, 2004: This release includes revised estimates of the rate of increase in semiconductor manufacturing capacity from February 2004 onward.
  • May 26, 2004: Papers presented at the August 2003 meeting of the American Statistical Association are available on the Documentation page. These papers describe the staff's work to convert the industrial production index from an SIC basis to a NAICS basis, the extension of the NAICS-based results back to 1972, and an analysis of the results.
  • May 14, 2004: In this issue of the G.17, the comparison base year for the data in Table 9, Gross Value of Final Products and Nonindustrial Supplies, and in Table 10, Gross-Value-Weighted Industrial Production: Stage-of-Process Groups, has been advanced to 2000 to conform with the comparison base year of the national income and product accounts. This release also includes updated estimates of industry capacity in 2004. The estimated rates of change in total industrial and manufacturing capacity in 2004 were little changed.
  • March 1, 2004: An article, Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization: The 2003 Annual Revision is available in the Winter 2004 edition of the Federal Reserve Bulletin.

Supplemental Monthly Release

The G.17 Supplement contains tables with detail on industrial production, capacity utilization, and electric power use that are not contained in the G.17 Monthly Release.
