Data Description:

Includes all demand deposits of federal public funds made by or for the account of the United States or some department, bureau, or official thereof. Also includes U.S. Treasury tax and loan accounts, including deposits of federal income tax withheld from employee salaries, from interest and dividend payments, and from distributions or payments from pensions, annuities, and other deferred income including IRA's, social security tax deposits and other federal tax payments, and the proceeds from sales of U.S. savings bonds. Note: Only deposits credited to the U.S. Treasury tax and loan demand deposit accounts that represents funds received as of the close of business of the "current" day should be reported as treasury tax and loan demand deposits. (The "current" day's deposits should reflect those deposits on the bank's books standing to the credit of the U.S. Treasury's tax and loan account as of the report date.) Funds credited to tax and loan demand deposit accounts as of the close of business on previous days should already have been remitted to the Federal Reserve Bank or automatically converted into open-ended interest bearing notes (included in item 2840), depending on the option selected by the reporting institution. Deposits of post exchanges at military posts and deposits of company, battery, and similar funds, and other quasi-government accounts are reported here only if the reporting bank has been designated by the treasury as a depository for such funds and appropriate security for the deposits has been pledged. Excludes deposits of U.S. Government agencies and instrumentalities (included in item 2240). COMPARABILITY: Beginning 10/30/80, for the purpose of the "EDDS" series, excludes: demand deposits for state or local governments or their political subdivisions; treasury tax and loan account note balances; and primary obligations. For the period 12/31/73 thru 10/15/74, national banks exclude deposits of U.S. postmasters of government funds which have come into their possession by virtue of their official positions. These are included in "Demand Deposits of Other Individuals, Partnerships, and Corporations (2240)".
