Figure 1: Changes in the Percentage of County Bank Branches Owned by Out-of-state Banks

This figure shows the percentage of bank branches owned by out-of-state banks in each county of the United States before and after the introduction of the Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act (IBBEA) using the FDIC summary of deposit database. Lighter blue color indicates lower out-of-state bank ownership in the county, and darker blue indicates a higher percentage of local branches owned by out-of-state banks. The image shows that the number of counties with a high percentage of local branches owned by out-of-state banks is much greater in Dec 2010 than in Dec 1994, especially in the eastern and western regions of the country.
