July 30, 1998 1995 Survey of Consumer Finances Instructions for Installing and Using the CAPI Questionnaires I. INSTALLING THE 1995 SCF CAPI PROGRAM The program files are contained in a self-extracting zip file called SCF_QUEX.BIN. To install the questionnaires, you will need an IBM-compatible 386+ PC with DOS v.6.xx or Windows 95 installed (we have not tested the program under Windows NT). You will require a hard disk with at least 1.5 megabytes of space available for the questionnaire programs. If you are running Windows, you may need to exit to DOS to execute the programs. To install the programs, follow these steps: 1. Download the executable CAPI program to a floppy disk. Save under the name SCF-QUEX.EXE (the default name should be SCF_QUEX.BIN). 2. In your CONFIG.SYS file, add the following line (or confirm that there is such a line with a number >=1536): SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /E:1536 /P 3. [OPTIONAL] Create a destination directory on your hard disk to hold the files. In the example, the destination directory is called SCF_95. 4. Insert the installation diskette into drive A: or B: 5. Change directory to SCF_95. (Depending on how your PC is configured, the DOS prompt may change to " C:\SCF_95". This is assumed in the example. ) 6. Execute the SCF_QUEX.EXE file as follows: A:SCF_QUEX -O C:\SCF_95 *.* 7. The files on the floppy disk will be uncompressed and the resulting files loaded into SCF_95. 8. Remove and store the installation diskette. II. III. ERRORS Despite intensive testing, there are known errors in the CAPI program. We make no effort to document those problems here. IV. UNINSTALLING PROGRAM Remove the entire contents of SCF_95 and then the directory itself. V. RIGHTS AND DISTRIBUTION This program is a special version of the original software that has been modified so that it does not save any data after the completion of a case. We have been premitted to distribute this software courtesy of Surveycraft Ltd. of Australia. You are free to make unlimited copies of this disk and distribute it. Please cite the 1995 Survey of Consumer Finances conducted by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and Surveycraft. The program code for this questionnaire was largely written by Geoff Walker at the National Opinion Research Center, with significant contributions by Val Cooke at NORC. The questionnaire wording was revised from the 1992 paper version by Arthur Kennickell, Martha Starr-McCluer, and Annika Sunden at the Federal Reserve. Substantial testing was performed by all these people and by Gerhard Fries at the Federal Reserve. VI.
