Figure 1 is titled “Industrial production, capacity, and capacity utilization: Total industry, January 1999-January 2006.” The figure shows graphs of revised and earlier measures of industrial production, capacity, and capacity utilization. The contours of the curves shown here are described in Table 1. The changes to total industrial production were small. The revision did not change the overall contour of manufacturing capacity. Capacity still accelerates rapidly in the second half of the 1990s, decelerates through 2004 (with a small decline in 2003), and picks up moderately in 2005. The expansion in 2004 is now reported to have been less than estimated earlier, and the increase in 2005 is somewhat stronger. Capacity utilization for total industry was revised up in recent years, although the revisions were relatively small; for the third quarter of 2005, utilization stood at 79.8 percent, a rate 0.5 percentage point higher than previous estimates suggested but 1.2 percentage points below its long-term (1972-2004) average (appendix Table A.7).
Figure 2 is titled “Industrial production: Market groups, January 1989-January 2006.” The figure shows four panels. The panel in the upper left shows the indexes for consumer goods and for final products and nonindustrial supplies. The panel in the lower left shows the indexes for construction supplies and for business supplies. The panel in the upper right shows the indexes for defense and space equipment and for business equipment. The panel in the lower right shows the indexes for energy materials and for non-energy materials. The data underlying the figure are also shown in the Table for Figure 2.
Figure 4 is titled “Industrial production: Selected high-technology industries, January 1999-January 2006.” The figure shows the production indexes for communications equipment, computers, and semiconductors. The data underlying the figure are shown in the Table for Figure 4.
Figure 5 is titled “Capacity utilization: Selected high-technology industries and manufacturing excluding selected high-technology industries, January 1989-January 2006.” The figure shows the utilization rates for selected high-technology industries and for manufacturing excluding selected high-technology industries. The data underlying the figure are shown in the Table for Figure 5.

Note: The rates of change for years are calculated from the fourth quarter of the previous year to the fourth quarter of the year specified. The capacity utilization rates are for the last quarter of the year.
The difference between the revised and earlier rates of change for production and capacity for 2005 is calculated for the period 2004:Q4 to 2005:Q3. The difference in capacity utilization for 2005 refers to 2005:Q3.
The selected high-tech industries are semiconductors and related electronic components, computers and peripheral equipment, and communications equipment.

[1] Rates of change are calculated as the percent change in the seasonally adjusted index from the fourth quarter of the previous year to the fourth quarter of the year specified in the column heading. For 2005, the difference between the rates of change are calculated from annualized rates of change between the fourth quarter of 2004 to the third quarter of 2005.

[3] Manufacturing comprises North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) manufacturing industries (sector 31-33) plus the logging industry and the newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishing industries. Logging and publishing are classified elsewhere in NAICS (under agriculture and information respectively), but historically they were considered to be manufacturing industries and were included in the industrial sector under the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. In December 2002 the Federal Reserve reclassified all its industrial output data from the SIC system to NAICS.

[1] North American Industry Classification System.
Return to table
[2] Manufacturing comprises North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) manufacturing industries (sector 31-33) plus the logging industry and the newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishing industries.

Note. The IP proportion data are estimates of the industries' relative contributions to the overall IP change between the reference year and the following year. For example, a 1 percent increase in durable goods manufacturing between 2005 and 2006 would account for a 0.429 percent increase in total IP.
