Description of 1998 Survey of Small Business Finance ASCII file (for non-SAS users) June 20, 2001 1. General Information The ASCII version of the 1998 Survey of Small Business Finances is a comma delimited ASCII flat (rectangular) file. There is only one logical record for each observation for a total of 3561 records in the dataset, plus one record at the beginning of the file which contains the variable names. The UNIX version of the ASCII data set is contained in the UNIX compressed file, ssbf98.dat.Z . The Windows version of the ASCII data set is contained in the zipped file, ssbf98.dat.zip. The maximum record length for the data set is 4189. There is a dictionary file, ssbf98.dct, which lists the position of the variable, the length, format (R=real, c=character), and the variable name. This file can be used to generate an input list. For SAS users, the list (including character informats) can also be found in the example program at the end of this document. 2. Variable Types There are only two types of variables: character and numeric. All but 7 of the 1514 variables in the data set are numeric. Most of the numeric variables take on only integer values. Those numeric variables that DO NOT take on integer values are MRL19, MRL20, MRL21, MRL22, L4, L10, L12, fin_wgt, and p2mon. Missing Values The missing values for the ASCII data set differ from those described in the CODEBOOK. For the ASCII data, there are two sets of missing value codes. The first set of missing value codes are for the 1486 variables where there are no negative values allowed. In a few of these variables, negative numbers are special codes. In isame2, isame3, isame5, and isame6, a value of -3 indicates the financial source was in a foreign country. In mrlr14, a value of -1 means the loan had no fixed maturity. Rounding error Users of the ASCII file should be aware there may be negligible differences between the flat file and the available SAS data set due to differences in variable lengths and rounding error. The default in SAS when reading numeric variables from a flat file is 8, which may differ from the SAS data set. However, these differences are largely inconsequential. A comparison between the two datasets, ASCII and SAS, shows the maximum difference between any given variable is 0.0000025 percent. 5. Example: Reading ASCII Flat File Into SAS Dataset The following is an example of how SAS code would be written in order to do the following: import the ASCII flat file into SAS, changed the missing
