Frequently Asked Questions
Interaction
Do staff economists in different sections or divisions interact frequently? Are staff economists allowed to move to other sections or divisions if they choose?
Economists interact daily with those in other sections and divisions. When possible, the economic research divisions accomodate economists wishing to move to another section or division. While some economists choose to spend a career working in one particular section, building a recognized expertise in one particular field, it is common for others to choose to move between sections or divisions on either a temporary or permanent basis.

The Washington area contains one of the largest groups of Ph.D. economists in the world. A number of universities are in the area, including American University, Georgetown University, George Mason University, George Washington University, Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland.
