Release Date: October 8, 2014

For release at 2:30 p.m. EDT

The Federal Reserve Board on Wednesday announced the appointment of William English as adviser to the Board for Monetary Policy in the Office of Board Members. Mr. English has served as director of the Board's Division of Monetary Affairs and as secretary to the Federal Open Market Committee since July 2010 and will continue to serve in those roles until a successor is in place.

"Over the last four years, as FOMC secretary and director of the Monetary Affairs Division, Bill has contributed immensely to the work of the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Open Market Committee," said Federal Reserve Board Chair Janet Yellen. "During a period in which monetary policy has been faced with exceptional challenges, Bill has helped the FOMC devise innovative strategies to achieve our dual mandate objectives and he has led the Committee work on policy normalization as well. I am enormously grateful for these contributions and for Bill's extraordinary dedication to public service."

As an adviser to the Board, Mr. English will continue to contribute to the monetary policy process and help support work related to the FOMC and, in particular, the work of the subcommittee on communications.

Mr. English began his career at the Board in 1992 as an economist. He was appointed to the Board's official staff in 2001. He was deputy director of the Monetary Affairs division from 2008-2010. During his career, he also has served as a visiting senior economist at the Bank for International Settlements and as a visiting senior economist at the President's Council of Economic Advisers. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. He holds a B.A. in economics and mathematics from Yale University and a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
