The Federal Reserve Board is pleased to be the host for this year's Central Bank Workshop on Macroeconomic Modeling to be held at the Board in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, September 26, and Friday, September 27, 2002.

Theme:
"Evolving economic structure and expectations: evidence, modeling and policy implications"

A perennial challenge in macroeconomic modeling is the potential for structural instability. The concern is that structural equations estimated on, say, postwar data will turn out to be less useful in recent periods because of advances in technology, changes in governance structures, or changes in policy conduct. What evidence is there for recent changes in structural relationships? Can structural shifts be empirically isolated from changes in policy or from changes in expectations formation? If so, how? How can modelers respond to structural change, prospective and actual? Is it best to simply allow for time-varying parameters? ignore them? or "robustify" the model?

Papers on these and closely related topics were selected from a large number of submissions. Preference was given to papers that are tightly related to macroeconomic modeling issues--as opposed to econometrics per se--and to papers that were at a high level of completion as of the submission date (May 17, 2002).

Completed papers are to be delivered to participants by Friday, August 30, 2002.

Central bank economists with an interest in macromodeling are invited to attend without obligation to present or discuss.

As in previous years, participants are responsible for their own expenses. The organizers have arranged local accommodations to economize on rates. For information or clarification, please contact the organizers:
