Figure 1: Intercorporate Equity Investments by Public Nonfinancial Corporations

This figure depicts intercorporate equity investments by public nonfinancial corporations in the Financial Accounts of the United States. Units are trillions of dollars and the data are quarterly. The June publication line begins in 1996 and generally increases over time. In contrast, the September publication line begins in 1963, is mostly above the June line, and shows more volatility. The September line mildly rises until the mid-1990s before increasing rapidly in the late 1990s (largely due to increases in the market-to-book ratio). It falls for much of the 2000s as net investment was on average negative during this period, and has risen in recent years.

The data are quarterly. The June publication line begins in 1996 while the September line begins in 1963. The September line is generally above the June line, reflecting the generally positive revision to our valution of intercorporate holdings.

Units are billions of dollars and the data are quarterly. Net investment was small until the late 1990s, rose to its peak in 1999, was mostly negative during the 2000s, and has been on average close to zero post-crisis.
