Series Structure
In the Flow of Funds Accounts and the Integrated Macroeconomic Accounts, each series is identified by a string of patterned letters and numbers. This page provides a breakdown of what the letters and numbers represent in a series mnemonic.
The prefix letters indicate the series type. For example, “FA” indicates a seasonally adjusted annual rate flow, while “FL” indicates a level that is not seasonally adjusted. The prefix box illustrates the relationships between series types.
| Prefix | Meaning | Derivation | Example |
| FA | Flow, seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) | (FU + FS) * 4 | (FU152090005.Q + FA152090005.Q) * 4 |
| FD | Revaluation/Other changes in volume | FL - FL[t-1] - FU | FL152090005.Q - FL152090005.Q[t-1] - FU152090005.Q |
| FG | Growth rate, seasonally adjusted (SA) | FA / LA[t-1] *100 | FA152090005.Q / LA152090005.Q[t-1] * 100 |
| FI | Index | FL / 1000 | FL073164013.Q/1000 |
| FL | Level, not seasonally adjusted (NSA) | FL[t-1] + FU + FD | FL152090005.Q[t-1] + FU152090005.Q + fd152090005.Q |
| FR | Change in unadjusted level | FL - FL[t-1] | FL152090005.Q - FL152090005.Q[t-1] |
| FS | Seasonal Factor | FA / 4 - FU | FA152090005.Q / 4 - FU152090005.Q |
| FU | Flow, not seasonally adjusted (NSA) | FL - FL[t-1] - FD or FA/4 -FS | FL152090005.Q - FL152090005.Q[t-1] - FD152090005.Q or FA152090005.Q/4 -FA152090005.Q |
| LA | Level, seasonally adjusted (SA) | LA[t-1] + FA/4 +FD | LA152090005.Q[t-1] + FA152090005.Q/4 + FD152090005.Q |
| PC | Percent change in index | (FI - FI[t-1]) / FI[t-1] | (FI073164013.Q - FI073164013.Q[t-1]) / FI073164013.Q[t-1] |
