Data Description:

Includes securities purchased for trading or investment purposes. Also includes marketable securities, and options and spot or future commodities at current market value, or lower of cost or market value, or items that are purchased by a broker or dealer in the ordinary course of business for the purpose of maintaining them in inventory for sale to customers.

Securities owned are reported at current market value or lower of cost or market value and trade date accounting that should be used. Trade date accounting is preferred since GAAP normally requires that financial effect be given to transactions at the time an event takes place--that is, the time an entity acquires a resource from or incurs an obligation to others.

Short sales of securities (requires borrowing of an equivalent security to make delivery to the purchaser) are considered trading transactions since they are intended to realize profits from short-term price movements. the obligation in a short sale is recorded as a gross liability and is not reflected in the trading account or netted against trading positions.
