Data Description:

Financial companies are institutions engaged primarily in activities such as, but not limited to, commercial, savings, and mortgage banking; sales, personal, and mortgage financing; factoring, finance leasing, and other business lending; insurance underwriting; and other investment activities. Also, includes as financial, the commercial paper issued by special purpose funding companies. Specifically, these are corporations that are organized for the sole purpose of issuing commercial paper in their own names and transmitting the proceeds to a third party. Commercial paper placed for banks or other financial institutions domiciled in foreign countries should also be included in item 6702. Includes outstanding paper placed for companies classified under SEC Industry Code 6022 - 6500 and 6790 - 6799 in the SEC Directory of Companies Required to File Annual Reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission. If issuing company is not listed in the SEC Directory, consult the Standard Industrial Classification Manual or its Supplement published by the Office of Management and Budget to determine, based on the company's principal line of business, its appropriate SIC Establishment Code. Companies should be classified as "financial" if their business corresponds to any of the following SIC Establishment Codes: 6022-6513 and 6790-6799. This item includes the sum of items 6697 and 6702.
