Data Description:

Total book value of all U.S. Treasury securities, e.g., bills, certificates of indebtedness, notes, and bonds, including those under the Separate Trading of Registered Interest and Principal of Securities (STRIPS) program. Excludes all obligations of U.S. Government Corporations and Agencies. The element of guarantee does not affect classification of securities as between this item and "U.S. Government Agencies and Corporations (0600)." Excludes all securities held in trading accounts. Also excludes detached treasury security coupons and ex-coupon treasury securities held as the result of either their purchase or the bank's stripping of such securities and treasury receipts such as CATS, TIGRS, COUGARS, LIONS and ETRs included in "All Other Securities (0411) and for the FR Y-9LP report, included in item 1299". Purchases and sales of securities under repurchase or similar agreements do not affect this item. Securities sold under repurchase agreements are reported as securities. All securities purchased under transactions of this type are included in "Federal Funds Sold and Securities Purchased Under Agreements to Resell (1350)". Pooled securities, in which participations are sold, are kept in the selling bank's securities portfolio. The proceeds from the participation sales are included in "Federal Funds Purchased and Securities Sold Under Agreements to Repurchase (2800)". Banks that buy participations in pooled securities include such purchases in "Federal Funds Sold and Securities Purchased Under Agreements to Resell (1350)". The bank's holdings of securities are not decreased by the amount of securities lent nor increased by the amount of securities borrowed; its holdings are unaffected by such transactions. The dollar amount of securities held is not reduced by the amount of short sales of securities. The bank's liability to others to deliver securities sold short (other than the liability represented by due bills) is included in "Other Liabilities (2938)". If a bank has purchased securities that have not yet been delivered, the amount of such purchases (other than the amount represented by due bills) is included in "Other Assets (2168)". For banks issuing due bills representing obligations to deliver securities, such due bills are treated as borrowings and do not reduce this amount. For banks acquiring due bills issued by others, such due bills are treated as loans and not as holdings of securities. NOTE: Reported on Schedule A-3 for the CUCP report. Reported in Schedule PC for the FR Y-9LP report. For the FR Y-9C (BHCK) report, the MDRM reflects data starting for the period of June 30, 1981 archival file. COMPARABILITY: Beginning 3/31/04, for series CUSA, report the amount of investments in U.S. Government Obligations, including U.S. Treasury Bills, Notes, Bonds, Zero Coupon Bonds and Strips, etc. Beginning 1/31/1997, for the CUCP report, includes all investments in US Government and Government Guaranteed Obligations (e.g., US Treasury Bills, US Treasury Notes, US Treasury Bonds, Farm Credit System Financial Assistance Corporation - FCSFAC, Federal Financing Bank - FFB, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Maritime Administration, etc.). These are now included in "Obligations of Other U.S. Government Agencies and Corporations (0600)"; (3) Item name was "U.S. Government Obligations"; (4) Reported net of valuation reserves.
