Data Description:

The book value of the bank's total holdings of all stocks (except corporate stocks), bonds, notes, and debentures, etc., not reported in "U.S. Treasury Securities (0400)", "Obligations of Other U.S. Government Agencies and Corporations (0600)", "Obligations of States and Political Subdivisions (0900)", "Corporate Stock (0980)", or "Investment in Unconsolidated Subsidiaries and Associated Companies (2130)". Minority interest in corporations, including those held in Edge Act and Agreement Corporations and those acquired for debts previously contracted, are included. Also includes minority interests not meeting the definition of "associated companies".

Excluded are holdings of Federal Reserve Bank stock, trading account securities, and majority interests in unconsolidated subsidiaries.

Reserves on securities have not been deducted but are reflected in "Reserves for Contingencies and Other Capital Reserves (3260)".

Purchases and sales of securities under repurchase or similar agreements do not affect this item. Securities sold under repurchase agreements are reported as securities. All securities purchased under transactions of this type are included in "Federal Funds Sold and Securities Purchased Under Agreements to Resell (1350)".

Pooled securities, in which participations are sold are kept in the selling bank's securities portfolio. The proceeds from the participation sales are included in "Federal Funds Purchased and Securities Sold Under Agreements to Repurchase (2800)". Banks that buy participations in pooled securities include such purchases in "Federal Funds Sold and Securities Purchased Under Agreements to Resell (1350)".

The bank's holdings of securities are not decreased by the amount of securities lent nor increased by the amount of securities borrowed; its holdings are unaffected by such transactions.

The dollar amount of securities held is not reduced by the amount of short sales of securities. The bank's liability to others to deliver securities sold short (other than the liability represented by due bills) is included in "All Other Liabilities (2938)". If a bank has purchased securities that have not yet been delivered, the amount of such purchases (other than the amount represented by due bills) is included in "All Other Assets (2168)".

For banks issuing due bills representing obligations to deliver securities, such due bills are treated as borrowings and do not reduce this amount. For banks acquiring due bills issued by others, such due bills are treated as loans and not as holdings of securities.

COMPARABILITY:

Prior to 3/31/76, not shown separately but included in "Other Securities (0950)".
