Data Description:

Includes all extensions of credit, regardless of security or type of instruments involved in the transactions, to: (1) financial intermediaries whose functions are predominantly extension of credit for business purposes or to finance personal expenditures; and (2) insurance companies. Loans to financial institutions or financial intermediaries as used herein, includes loans to sales finance companies, both direct loans and negotiable obligations of finance companies purchased either from issuing company or from dealers; loans to factors and other companies extending credit to finance inventories or to carry accounts receivable; and loans to real estate companies and mortgage lenders of the type in which mortgages or similar liens on real estate are not sold to the bank but are merely pledged as collateral against loans made to these companies. Includes all loans to mutual savings banks, personal finance and loan companies, credit unions, insurance companies, federal lending agencies (e.g. Federal Land Banks, Federal Intermediate Credit Banks, Federal Home Loan Banks, etc.), building or savings and loan and other similar associations. Insurance companies includes life, casualty, fire, health, and other types. Includes loans to investment companies that hold stock of operating companies for management or developmental purposes, but excludes loans to brokers and dealers in securities or to investment trusts of the mutual fund or the closed end types which hold stock for investment purposes. Includes loans to regional or local industrial development authorities whose function is extension of credit to business firms to assist in relocation or expansion (unless such loans are secured by mortgages or other liens on real estate, in which case they are classified as "Real Estate Loans Secured by Nonfarm Nonresidential Properties (1480)"). COMPARABILITY: Prior to 7/2/69, W416 series includes "Federal Funds Sold and Securities Purchased Under Agreements to Resell (1350)." Prior to 6/30/67, RCON series includes part of securities purchased under agreements to resell. Prior to 4/26/61, W416 series includes loans to some nonbank financial institutions which were reclassified as "Other Loans (2090)." Prior to 12/31/60, RCON series excludes loans to real estate companies, sales finance companies, and mortgage lenders. At that time, these loans were included in "Commercial and Industrial Loans (1600)." NOTE: Reported in Schedule C for the FFIEC 002 report. Also excludes all transactions with related depository institutions.
