Data Description:
Includes extensions of credit (limited by "Loans to Financial Institutions (1495)" above) to the following financial institutions:
(1) Depository institutions, other than commercial banks, that are domiciled in the United States, Puerto Rico, and U.S. dependencies and insular possessions including trust territories, such as (a) credit unions, (b) mutual savings banks, (c) savings or building and loan associations, (d) cooperative banks, and (e) other similar depository institutions;
(2) Investment banks, both domestic and foreign;
(3) Bank Holding Companies, both domestic and foreign;
(4) Federal lending agencies, such as (a) Federal Land Banks, (b) Federal Intermediate Credit Banks, and (c) Federal Home Loan Banks;
(5) Foreign finance companies and foreign mortgage finance companies; and
(6) Other domestic and foreign financial intermediaries (excluding those institutions included in "Loans to Finance Companies in the U.S. (1540)") whose functions are predominately extensions of credit for business purposes, such as (a) investment companies that hold stock of operating companies for management or development purposes; (b) regional or local industrial development authorities in the United States whose function it is to extend credit to business firms to assist in relocation or expansion, (however, if loans are secured primarily by real estate as evidenced by mortgages or other liens, they are classified as real estate loans in "Loans Secured by Nonfarm Nonresidential Properties (1480)", when the loans are made from domestic offices); and (c) regional or local development authorities in foreign countries whose function it is to extend credit to business firms or others for assisting in relocation, expansion, or development. If loans to such authorities are secured primarily by real estate as evidenced by mortgages or other liens, they are classified as "Real Estate Loans (1410)".
Excludes all transactions that are included in "Federal Funds Sold and Securities Purchased Under Agreements to Resell (1350)".
Excludes loans to brokers and dealers in securities and loans to investment trusts of the mutual fund or the close end type which hold stock for investment purposes. These are included in "Loans for Purchasing or Carrying Securities (1545)".
COMPARABILITY:
