Data Description:

Includes all demand deposits standing to the credit of banks in foreign countries (i.e., outside the U.S. and its territorial and insular possessions) including demand balances of foreign branches of other American banks but excluding amounts due to own foreign branches. Demand deposits of foreign banks includes all demand deposits of foreign commercial banks, savings banks, discount houses, and other similar foreign institutions accepting short-term deposits. Reciprocal demand balances of such banks are reported gross. Includes deposits of all such foreign institutions, including those affiliated with U.S. banking institutions, such as foreign offices related to U.S. branches and agencies of foreign banks and foreign banking institutions affiliated with Edge Act and Agreement Corporations. Does not include deposits of central banks, foreign development banks, treasuries, exchange control offices, stabilization funds, and such international institutions as the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Inter-American Development Bank, and demand deposits of nationalized banking and other banking institutions owned by central governments which have as an important part of their function activities similar to those of a treasury, central bank, exchange control office, or stabilization fund, which are included in "Demand Deposits of Foreign Governments and Official Institutions, Etc. (2300)". Nationalized banks not performing such official functions are included here. Also excludes deposits of U.S. branches and agencies of foreign banks and New York State Investment Companies (included in item 2310 or in item 2347). If the demand deposit account of a bank located in a foreign country becomes overdrawn, the resulting overdraft (whether unplanned or contractually agreed to in advance) is reported as a loan in "Loans to Banks in Foreign Countries (1510)". NOTE: For the FFIEC 002 report, reported as an derived item in Schedule E which includes the sum of items 2323 and 2326. For the Quarterly Report of Condition for New York State Investment Companies, includes amounts for credit balances, which are reported separately on the IBA Call. COMPARABILITY: Prior to 4/12/61, includes a large portion of "Deposits of Foreign Governments and Official Institutions, Central Banks, and International Institutions (2300)."
