Data Description:

All nontransaction accounts (including MMDA's) of public moneys made by or for account of the U.S. or some department, bureau, or official thereof. Deposits by U.S. postmasters of government funds which have come into their possession by virtue of their positions are classified as U.S. Government deposits. Also includes deposits standing to the credit of certain quasi-government institutions when the reporting bank has been designated by the Treasury as a depository for such funds and appropriate security for the deposits has been pledged. The total amount of United States Government deposits arising from bond subscriptions, sales of United States savings bonds, withheld federal income tax deposits, social security tax deposits, other deposits credited to the United States Treasury, and all other government deposits such as disbursing accounts are included here. Excludes nontransaction accounts of the Export-Import Bank and deposits of such federally-sponsored lending agencies as: Federal Land Banks, Federal Intermediate Credit Banks, Federal Home Loan Banks, Banks for Cooperatives, the Environmental Financing Authority, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, the Federal National Mortgage Corporation, the Student Loan Marketing Association, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Federal Financing Bank, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the National Credit Union Administration Central Liquidity Facility, and the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund. COMPARABILITY: Prior to 3/31/84, item name was "Time Deposits of United States Government" For the period 12/31/73 thru 10/15/74, national banks excludes deposits of U.S. postmasters of government funds which have come into their possession by virtue of their official positions. These are included in "Other Time Deposits of Individuals, Partnerships, and Corporations (2420)". NOTE: Postal Savings System closed by act of Congress no "postal savings" after 6/30/65.
