Data Description:
Reported here are time deposits standing to the credit of central, and local governments in foreign countries and to their ministries, departments, and agencies. Among these are treasuries, ministries of finance, central banks, development banks, exchange control offices, stabilization funds, diplomatic and other representative establishments, fiscal agents, and nationalized banking and other banking institutions that are owned by central governments and that have as an important part of their function activities similar to those of a treasury, central bank, exchange control office, stabilization fund, etc. Also includes deposits of international and regional institutions, such as the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Bank for International Settlement, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the United Nations. The following are excluded from this item: (1) Deposits of nationalized banks and other banking institutions that are owned by foreign governments and do not function as central banks, banks of issue, or development banks. Thus, excludes deposits of such institutions as government-owned foreign commercial banks, savings banks, discount houses, and other similar foreign institutions that accept short-term deposits. (2) Deposits of U.S.-domiciled branches and agencies of foreign official institutions (reported in "Time Deposits of U.S. Branches and Agencies of Foreign Banks (2553)"). (3) Deposits of foreign government-owned nonbank commercial and industrial enterprises (reported in "Time Deposits of Individuals, Partnerships, and Corporations (6750)"). NOTE: For the "IBF" series, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories and possessions are included as foreign governments. COMPARABILITY: Prior to 4/12/61, not shown separately. A large portion of this item is included in "Time Deposits of Banks in Foreign Countries (2560)" and a smaller amount is included in "Other Time Deposits of Individuals, Partnerships, and Corporations (2420)."
