Data Description:
For national and state member banks, includes the total amount outstanding debt that is redeemable only with the proceeds from the sale common or perpetual preferred stock and that qualifies as primary capital. Includes only equity commitment notes that were issued by national banks prior to April 15, 1985, and by state member banks prior to May 15, 1985. Later issues of equity commitment notes do not qualify as bank primary capital. State nonmember banks do not have to report this item since equity commitment notes do not qualify as bank primary capital, regardless of when issued.
The amount reported reflects all such qualifying debt regardless of whether the total exceeds the maximum amount of equity commitment notes that may be counted as primary capital. (The maximum amount of equity commitment notes that may be counted as primary capital is limited to 10 percent of primary capital, exclusive of mandatory convertible debt.) Note: For reporting periods 85/06 and 85/12 this item represents equity commitment rates, net for the BHC series.
