Data Description:

Includes the dollar amount of performance letters of credit outstanding, including those collateralized by cash deposit accounts. All risk participations in performance standby letters of credit that have been conveyed to U.S. depository institutions (or to other OECD banks when applicable) at a 20% risk-weight in column D (BHC2) are reported. If the performance standby letter of credit or a portion thereof is conveyed to a non-OECD bank, the amount of that participation is reported in column D (BHC2) if the remaining maturity on the participation is one year or less. When the standby letter of credit takes the form of a syndication, each banking organization should only include its pro rata share of the total amount of the standby in this item. Performance standby letters of credit are irrevocable obligations of the bank to pay a third-party beneficiary when a customer (account party) fails to perform some other contractual non-financial obligation. Prior to 3/31/01, the sum of the amounts reported in columns A through D (BHC0, BHC2, BHC5, and BHC9) of this item when multiplied by two corresponds to the amount of performance standby letters of credit included in Schedule HC-F, Part I, "Standby Letters of Credit Outstanding (items 3376 and 3377)". The mnemonic prefixes for the risk weight columns represents the following:    BHC0   = (Column A) 0%    BHC2   = (Column B) 20%    BHC5   = (Column C) 50%    BHC9   = (Column D) 100% For an detailed description of the broad categories of transactions that are assigned to each risk weight category (columns A through D) established by the Risk-Based Guidelines, see the Instructions for Preparation of Reporting Form FR Y-9C Schedule HC-I. If a bank holding company has not established the systems to determine the risk weight(s) applicable for a transaction, it has the option of risk-weighting that transaction at 100%. NOTE: Beginning 3/31/01, reported on Schedules HC-L and HC-R for the FR Y-9C (BHCK) report. For Schedule HC-R, report in column A the face amount of financial standby letters of credit reported in Schedule HC-L, item 2. In column B, report 100 percent of the face amount reported in column A. In column D-20% risk weight, include the credit equivalent amount of the portion of financial standby letters of credit reported in Schedule HC-L, item 2(a), that has been conveyed to U.S. and other OECD depository institutions (and to non-OECD depository institutions for letters of credit with remaining maturities of one year or less). In column F 100% risk weight, include the portion ofthe credit equivalent amount reported in column B that is not included in columns C through E. Prior to 3/31/01, reported on Schedule HC-I. Reported only by the top-tier bank holding companies with consolidated assets of $150 million or more. Prior to 6/30/91, this schedule (Schedule HC-I) is reported as confidential. Also reported by bank holding companies with consolidated assets of $150 million or more but less than $1 billion.
